Stubbington Green Runners & AC

Great South - 9th October 2005

A race of ten miles and a thousand smiles - the BUPA Great South Run attracted a field of more than 11,000 runners, including a large contingent of Stubbington Green Runners.

The 13th running of the event around the streets of Portsmouth was an unbridled success. Tens of thousands of spectators lined the route of the race to cheer on the elite runners, the clubs runners and the numerous fun runners decked out in an array of costumes.

Bands played along the route, and despite the warm weather, organisers reported there were only two casualties who required hospital treatment, and both were later released.

For Stubbington, Simon Hearnden paced his race well, moving through the field to finish 213th in a time of 1hr 4min 34sec - the best-placed Stubby. Not far behind was Tim Crumpton in 238th who despite an impromptu toilet stop early on, managed to clock a useful 1:05.16. Dave King recorded a personal best 1:06.46 for 309th .

There was disappointment for Zippy Grice, who had been feeling under the weather before the race. Despite starting off well, and reeling off five minute miles in the early stages, Zippy struggled and was forced to walk around mile six near Canoe Lakes, and clocked 1:21.11 - finishing behind wife Helen!

However Jon Leigh continued his preparations for the Dublin Marathon next month with an encouraging 1:07.56 for 367th place, and made up for a disappointing Windsor Half Marathon recently when he was poorly.

And Paul Hammond was just a couple of seconds behind for 1:07.58 and 371st spot.

Meanwhile John Yuda regained his BUPA Great South Run title despite going off course after four miles.

The Tanzanian, along with defending champion Hendrick Ramaala and Wilfred Taragon, had established a 20-yard lead before following a television crew's motorcycle, instead of the leading vehicle.

Yuda recovered to again hit the front and win the 10-mile race in a time of 46 minutes 45 seconds ahead of South Africa's Ramaala by 54 seconds, with Taragon from Kenya third in 47:42secs.

Derartu Tulu set an Ethiopian record of 51:27secs when scoring an easy victory in the women's race, beating compatriot Elfenesh Alemu and Hungary's Aniko Kalovics.

Tulu decimated Teyiba Erkiso's previous three-year-old national record of 52:55, with Alemu also 37 seconds under the old mark.

Kalovics lowered the Hungarian record to 52:28, a healthy improvement on the time of 53:06 also achieved in Washington 12 years ago by Karolina Szabo.

David Weir won the wheelchair race clocking 35:15 well in front of Tushar Patel while Shelly Woods, winner of last month's BUPA Great North Run, took the women's wheelchair race in a time of 44:01.
