STUBBINGTON'S Barry Hards took third place at the Clarendon Way Marathon on October 2nd, while two green-vested Stubby teams competed in the relay.

Barry revelled in the sunny conditions for the 26.2-mile race which started from the grounds of Winchester College to record a time of 3hrs 2min 27sec - finishing eight minutes behind race winner Stephen Goulding of Pewsey Vale Harriers who won in 2:54.37. Barry was also the first Veteran 45 runner to finish at Wyvern College in Laverstock, Salisbury.

The Clarendon Way Marathon starts from Winchester College in the city centre on the banks of the River Itchen. It passes through some stunning countryside in Hampshire and Wiltshire before finishing at Wyvern College, Laverstock in Salisbury. The route is off-road, but is also tough and challenging.

This year there were 1,070 registered runners for the full, half and relay marathon, now in its eighth year, and marshalled by the Rotary clubs of Winchester and Salisbury.

The half marathon, which was started from the village hall in Broughton, was won by Andrew Hennessy from Wells City Harriers in a record time of 1hr 12min 41sec. In the full marathon vs half marathon challenge and given a 90 minute split, Hennessy was able to beat Goulding to the finish line by nearly 12 minutes.

Stubbington's super athlete, Caroline Street, was the club's lone athlete in the women's marathon, finishing 42nd in 5hr 9min 24sec. For the second year running, Susan Sleath from Hardley Runners won the race with an impressive 3:18.37.

Nick Crane competed in the half marathon, finished 59th in a time of 1hr 41min 25sec, to come fourth in the Veteran 50 age group. In the women's race, Jane Thomson clocked 2:02.18 for 74th place.

The club also fielded two teams in the marathon relay which follows the same course as the full marathon. It is a mixed team four stage relay, each leg being an average of 10.5km in length.

Stubbington Green Too placed 25th in 3:39.25, and Stubbington Green came 46th in 4:04.01, with City of Salisbury the first squad home in 2:51.05.
